Definition of a Crisis
A time-limited period of psychological disequilibrium, precipitated by a sudden significant change in a person's life situation, or the eruption of volatile emotions attached to an individual's personal history, which results in demands for internal and external adjustment which for the time being are not possible for the individual to achieve alone.
Our objectives
- The psychological resolution of the immediate crisis and restoration to at least the level of functioning that existed prior to the crisis.
- To assist those with repetitive and regular chronic patterns of non-coping, by incorporating in our procedures methods of interrupting any such patterns in ways which would strengthen the person's ability to cope.
- To respond to 'recurrent emergencies' which show as the release and expression of emotional tension in which the client expresses distress and anger at their circumstances. By means of:
1) A telephone service which provides an immediate response to the client.
2) A brief assessment for any individual contacting the service.
3) Intensive short-term work with a face-to-face counsellor.
